Die Zahl an Arbeitslosen wird monatlich anhand von Daten der Arbeitsmarktstatistik von der Bundesagentur für Arbeit veröffentlicht. Die Daten über offene Stellen beinhalten die Meldungen über sozialversicherungspflichtige, geringfügige und sonstige Arbeitsstellen, die von Arbeitgebern ausgeschrieben und gemeldet worden sind. 

Mit dem Beginn der Covid-19 Pandemie Anfang des Jahres 2020 fiel die Nachfrage nach Arbeitskräften kurzfristig sehr deutlich und die Anzahl an Arbeitslosen stieg dementsprechend an. Nachdem sich die Situation zunächst kontinuierlich stabilisiert hatte, stieg die Anzahl der Arbeitslosen mit Beginn des Angriffskriegs Russlands gegen die Ukraine im Frühjahr 2022 und den daraus resultierenden Fluchtbewegungen jedoch erneut an.
